Success As A Mid-Life Entrepreneur
Tuesday, October 28th, 2008

Is being a mid-life entrepreneur, or baby boomer entrepreneur not what you thought it would be?

Are you having second thoughts? Is negative self chatter getting in your way?

If you have been “at this”, meaning your own business, for some time now and are still struggling, it’s time to ask yourself some serious questions why.

What is the difference between YOU and other people?

Why is it that “somebody else” seems to “make it” and you don’t?

It’s not because of some “magic” product, it’s not because of some “push button system” or some so-called latest and greatest tool.

Ignore what you read about so called “underachievers”, “the lazy way to riches” or any other lame marketing tactic that preys on your emotions and simply empties your purse.

Pay close attention to what I am about to tell you.

The difference between people who are struggling and people who are not is that those who are successful made a decision to be successful.

We all have 24 hours in a day, we all have circumstances and “stuff” that comes at us every single day.

It’s what YOU decide to do with that 24 hours and how YOU react to those circumstances which decides if you will move forward or stay behind.

That’s it. A simple decision to do whatever it takes to be successful.

It doesn’t matter how tall you are, what body shape you have, how pretty you are or the kind of childhood you had. There are thousands of stories of famous and not-so famous people who decided to overcome their adversity.

Oprah Winfrey is one who immediately comes to mind. “Sure, she’s famous” you may be saying, but she wasn’t always famous. She was both born into poverty and had a horrendous childhood, but what stood her apart from others is that she made a choice to overcome - to move forward.

Have you heard of Sandy Morgan? She is not so famous. Sandy is a distributor of Send Out Cards who was born with cerebral palsy. While she has very limited motor functions, yet she has 100% of her intellectual function. She can’t speak or walk, but she can use a keyboard.

Although Sandy may not be so famous, she is very successful. She uses Send Out Cards to communicate with the world. She may not be able to use the spoken word with her mouth, but her brain and a computer allow her to use the written word.

Sandy made a choice to be successful, to not live off of government handouts just because of her physical challenge. She uses Send Out Cards to build a business for herself. Good on you Sandy!

So, what is stopping YOU?

We’ve heard it before, but I’ll say it again. Life isn’t a dress rehearsal. This is the real deal. You either make the decision NOW or you don’t. One day, you’re going to wake up at 75 or 80 years old and the last thing you want to say to yourself is, “I wish I would have…”

You can either create results or create excuses. And as my favourite saying goes -

You can’t make success and excuses at the same time!
title=So, what’s it going to be?

Are you going to be a successful mid-life entrepreneur or are you going to sit back and let others create their own midpreneur success?

I hope you DECIDE to make the right choice.

Baby Boomer Entrepreneur
Gen X Entrepreneur
Mid-life Entrepreneur
MidPreneur

What do the above terms have in common?
Yes, many many new entrepreneurs begin and develop a small business in mid-life, and become extremely successful.

You have worked hard and planned for retirement and here it is staring you squarely in the face. Reaching this point can be a blessing and a curse. You eagerly anticipated retirement, but you have some nagging doubts about what retirement holds for you.

Perhaps, the major doubt you have is financial. Modern medicine has had a major impact on your retirement planning. When you formulated your retirement savings plan 30 years ago, you did not think that you might live as long as you probably will. You want to live a long, healthy life, but in doing so, you could potentially outlive your retirement savings. The answer to this dilemma - become an entrepreneur. Working after retirement can substantially extend your retirement savings.

Well, if you become an entrepreneur after retirement you will be in good company. Several studies show that the fastest growing group of entrepreneurs are aged 60 and older.

Just what is an entrepreneur?

The word comes from the French word “entreprendre”, which means “to undertake”. Let’s get a definition from the Merriam Webster Dictionary. It defines entrepreneur as “one who organizes, manages, and assumes the risks of a business enterprise.”

Do not let this frighten you. It is an opportunity for you to expand your horizons and to become your own boss. Possibly, this has been your long term dream.

Some people wonder if they are too old to become an entrepreneur upon retirement and if being over 60 is too old for entrepreneurship. Recent studies indicate that the odds are in the favor of the older entrepreneur. Recent studies show that 22 percent of men and 14 percent of women over 65 are self-employed. That’s compared to just 7 percent for other age groups.

According to a Vanderbilt University study the number of entrepreneurs age 45 to 64 will grow by 15 million by 2006. This is compared to a four million decline for entrepreneurs age 25 to 44.

According to a 1998 survey of baby boomers conducted by the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) 80 percent of respondents planned to work beyond retirement age, and 17 percent of those planned to launch new businesses.

The same study noted, “Self-employment among American workers increases with age, with the most dramatic jump occurring at age 65.”

Older entrepreneurs have an advantage over younger entrepreneurs because older entrepreneurs tend to have more experience to draw from and more assets with which to finance a business. The bumps and scrapes of life are a stern teacher.

More information can be found in a report published by Barclays Bank entitled “Third Age Entrepreneurs - Profiting From Experience”. The report shows that older entrepreneurs are responsible for 50 percent more business start-ups than 10 years ago. This amounts to approximately 60,000 business start-ups last year alone.

The Barclays survey also showed that today’s third age entrepreneurs (entrepreneurs over age 50) do not mind putting in the hours required to build their business. Nearly 49 percent indicated that they work an average of 36 or more hours per week.

The third age group rated holidays, lack of stress and a balance between work and home life more important than their younger counterparts.

The report further showed that only 27 percent run the business as the only source of household income, with 51 percent supplementing their pensions.

Other key findings showed that third age start-ups account for 15 percent of all new businesses, and third age entrepreneurs are three times more likely to be male than female. The downside is that many businesses fail within the first few years and older entrepreneurs may be less able to handle the financial loss than younger entrepreneurs.

If you lose everything at age 25 you have time to recover, but it’s a much bigger hit to lose everything at 65.

THE TITLE ENTREPRENEUR IS GENDER NEUTRAL

Years ago, the title “entrepreneur” would have been worn by a man, but times have definitely changed. For you women entrepreneurs, this article is gender neutral.

Information published by the Center For Women’s Business Research indicates there are over 10 million women-owned businesses in the US, employing 18 million people, and generating $2.32 trillion in sales.

Women start businesses at two times the rate of men, and women-owned businesses account for 28 percent of all businesses in the United States. Women represent about 775,000 new startups per year and account for 55% of new startups.

In the past 25 years the number of women-owned firms in the US has doubled, their employment has increased four-fold and their revenues have risen five-fold.

All the statistics should convince you that you should take a hard look at becoming an entrepreneur as your retirement job. You will be in good company.

Mid-Preneurs
- the new term for mid-life entrepreneurs or baby boomer entrepreneurs. I love it!

Happy MidpreneurThat’s what I am and that’s what many of you are. Yes, midpreneurs, and we’re sure proud of it.

I was scouring the net and came across the following article and it provides an interesting read.

It used to be that middle age was the time to buy a fancy sports car, take up hang-gliding and mountain climbing, and dump your old life-partner for a newer model.

It’s been called mid-life crisis, the sudden realization that life is finite and the time to achieve your dreams is already half gone.

Times change. It’s not that 30- to 40-year-olds have all magically come to grips with middle-age, it’s just that for many millions of them the method of scratching their feelings of angst has altered.

Now, rather than buying a cheap toupee and bluffing their way into trendy night spots, many in the 30-to-40-year-old club have decided that the best and most exciting way to take their life in a new direction is to shuck their suit and tie or high heels and dress and drop-kick their 9 to 5 lifestyle into another time zone.

What this new generation of mid-lifers has discovered is the joy of starting and running their own business.

They are part of the new and ever-growing legions of mid-life entrepreneurs.

There is no one reason that someone in mid-life chooses to become an entrepreneur. For some it is simply a feeling that there must be something more to life than working for someone else day in and day out. For others it may be the involuntary loss of a job and the need to replace the lost income. For still others it can be the desire to do something more with one’s life, to give something back to the community.

But no matter what the reason, the numbers are growing. Today, according to the U.S. Census Bureau, almost one quarter of new business start-ups are helmed by someone 30 to 50.

Take Andrew Aussie, 39, who was head of marketing for 11 years for Kashi brand cereals before deciding that he could do a better job on his own and, at age 37, started his own natural food company, Honest Foods. Next year he expects to top $1 million in sales.

Or Reed Hastings, who, after being charged more than $40 in late fees at a video store, decided there had to be a better way and, at age 42, founded the highly-successful Netflix DVD subscription service.

Not all middle-aged entrepreneurs strive for the mega-success of a Netflix, but the Census Bureau estimates that over the next decade new business start-ups by middle-aged “regular folks” will account for as much as 65% of the nation’s goods and services.

Are you one of them? You likely have skills and expertise, but do you have business and marketing acumen? It’s one thing to be reading to launch a start-up and quite another knowing how to properly structure and create success. To attain profitability, we recommend all entrepreneurs focus on 4 keys:

1. Establish a memorable and unmistakeable brand identity:

The secret to business success is determined by your ability to powerfully communicate your business with laser precision and your ability to deliver a clearly-defined and consistent experience.

In a nutshell… it’s called branding, and, when done right, it ensures a thriving business with all the customers and profits you need. The secret is to establish a powerful brand identity that sings distinction. And establish that identity before you launch any marketing activities.

2. Create a deep connection with your core target audience - your potential raving fans!

Who wants and needs what you have to offer? The only wrong answer is “everyone.” If you’re a pediatrician, you may see infants and children. Are they your target audience? No! They are your patients, but it’s the parents you need to connect with to get the kids in your door. And it’s not just any parents - it’s a definite group of parents.

In marketing, you get a lot more “bang for your buck” if you focus your spending on a well-defined group of people that you enjoy working with. The better you define this group, the more effective your marketing can be.

3. Design compelling offerings that pull customers in like a magnet.

80% of all purchase decisions are based on emotion. It’s your job as a marketer to know how your customers want to feel and to get them to visualize how your services can meet their needs. People want to know, “What’s in it for me?” Tap into the emotion and create offerings that touch your customers.

4. Craft A Personal, Workable Marketing Plan

Marketing is everything you do to make your product or service more visible, more desirable and more profitable. Your marketing plan will clearly define the big picture and provide focus and direction based on the 4 ‘P’s of Marketing - product, price, place/distribution and promotion.

Since 90% of small business owners do not have a plan, you’ll have a leg up on your competition by crafting your personal, workable marketing plan to ensure that you reach your business goals.

Are you ready to create a business you can brag about? Do your homework, listen to your calling, and get out and play big! There’s more to life than that 9 to 5 job working for someone else!

Strategies to Support Women in Midlife
Saturday, October 18th, 2008

Strategies to Support Women in Midlife
whose light is shining within them, and is looking to shine more brightly each day.

Focus on your assets and abilities rather than what you consider to be your flaws.

The principle that “What we focus on increases” applies particularly to our emphasis on what’s not up to our standards in our own person or character, in other words ‘our perception’ of ourselves. Remember that praising good behaviour yields more good behaviour. It’s true with children. It’s even more true with ourselves. What nice thing have you said TO and ABOUT yourself today?

Look back when you want to see what you have accomplished, instead of ahead.

It’s difficult to measure progress when you are always looking at how far you still have to go. Adapt the spiritual truth that ‘there is no where to get to and you’ll never get it done.’ This has been incredibly helpful for me - since one of my mantras has been - “I’m not doing enough!”

Find an older mentor that you admire & mentor a younger person.

Isn’t it true that even some of the popular magazines are now pointing to midlife role models who are women over 40. Our time has come. And with it comes the call to give back. We didn’t have a lot of role models when we were young. “Be the change you wish to see in the world.”

Find your own voice and spiritual center.

No one else can be You as well as you can. All your experience is worth sharing. Spend time discovering your essence and go ahead and be yourself. This is KEY to helping make the ageing process a happy one. Being ’selfish’ requires finding your true SELF - and nothing is more important.

Do at least one new thing for each birthday that stretches you beyond what you thought possible.

The spiritual life is about celebrating ever-expanding Good. One of my friends shared this tip with me many years ago. A fairly serious man, he took a class and actually performed in a stand-up comedy club. Another older woman friend went up in a air-balloon for her 80th birthday celebration. Another friend just bought a red convertible - what about you?

Make a scrapbook of your life - and write what you appreciate about each year that has passed.

Put at least one picture for each year, and where you don’t have real pictures, put something from a magazine that represented who you were at that time. Then, list the people who had been part of your lives and all the events that took place that you now consider significant.

Creating your scrapbook using stickers and stencils and beautifully colored papers. You may have never considered yourself as an artist, but this book can be something you will treasure as much as any work of art.

SMILE more.
Stop worrying about wrinkles. It’s amazing how many endorphins are released just by smiling. You cannot feel down when your lips are turned up.

Staying in Shape Over 40 - What You Need to Know
By Megan Hazel

Turning 40 can be a powerful and transient event even though many women believe that everything starts to change or even fall apart at 40. This doesn’t have to be so! Women can stay strong and competitive, healthy and fit well over the age of 40. There may be some changes you need to make, but it is an important time for you to make these changes so that you can continue to stay in shape.

Dietary Nutrition

Some basic dietary changes can help you to supplement your workouts and keep you strong. Calcium, for example, has always been important in a woman’s diet, but it is critical to start supplementing calcium now if you haven’t already. Bone density begins to decline and if this gets really bad, it can lead to osteoporosis later in life. Ginseng is an herb that can help to give you energy when you start to feel fatigue, and some people swear it is what helps keep them young. Consuming a lot of fruits and vegetables is crucial to keeping yourself young. Not only is it very healthy for your body, it is quite beneficial for your skin as well. Natural foods, especially fruits and vegetables, are full of antioxidants, and these help keep free radicals from destroying that youthful appearance of your skin. Also good are salmon and other foods such as almonds, flax and fatty fish which provide a strong source of Omega 3 fatty acids. Again, this is good for your heart health but also for your radiant skin.

Healthy Ageing With Yoga

Staying in shape past 40 also means getting - or staying - physical, of course. You may discover aches and pains that you haven’t noticed prior to turning 40. It’s not because 40 is some magical age, but rather a useful timeline to gauge when women tend to start feeling less energetic, more rigid, or have tighter muscles than they used to. A fun and relaxing antidote to this is yoga. Yoga has been said to be the true fountain of youth! A good, long yoga session a few times a week or a simple practice of ten to twenty minutes daily can relax, tone and lengthen your muscles as well as your spirit. It also helps to de-stress your mind, which has been shown to have an effect on cortisol levels in the body. By reducing cortisol, you can help reduce the belly fat that may be more stubborn to remove these days. Any time of stress-relieving mechanism you use will help keep you young, but yoga is an especially good one.

If yoga isn’t really your speed, pick something that is. Maybe you enjoy spinning, or a step class or kickboxing. Whatever it is, don’t stop now just because you’ve reached that dreaded age. Keeping active now is just as important as it was when you were twenty, if not more so. If your aches and pains feel like they are preventing you from doing what you like to do best, it probably means you need to stretch more. Stretching can be a wonderful tool to keep you young and keep your muscles supple and strong. It can help prevent muscle tears and help you reach new levels of fitness by warming up the muscles and ligaments, but it can also just feel great after a nice, long bout of exercise. If you run or bike, be sure to stretch the calves and quadriceps muscles as well as the hamstrings. If you like to partake in a class at your gym and there is a lot of jumping involved, make sure to stretch the ankles as well. Simply adding ten or fifteen minutes of stretching to your daily routine can make you feel years younger if you are faithful about it.

Staying in shape over 40 doesn’t just mean looking good or staying in good shape on the outside. Once you reach the age of forty, keeping up with regular doctor appointments becomes more important than it was in days past. Make sure to get a mammogram and screen for early detection of breast cancer. Make an appointment with your general practitioner for a complete physical. Consult with a dermatologist, and keep regular full-body skin checkups once or twice a year, which can help screen out skin cancer and suspicious moles that may crop up. If you used to see the eye doctor once every couple of years, cut that in half and see him once annually. Unfortunately, the eyes are quick to deteriorate as you age, and you will want to keep up with these check-ups for safety reasons, to be able to keep reading, and to check for signs of glaucoma and other age-related diseases.

Nobody said getting older was fun, but it does not have to be painful. The age-old adage that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure applies to the aging process very well, and if you take these measures you too can age gracefully.

How to Turn Your Passion into Passive Revenue
Thursday, October 2nd, 2008

Today’s article is by James Roche will show you just

How to Turn Your Passion into Passive Income.

Isn’t that something we’d all like to do?

Take the following tips from James and be on your own way to earning passive revenue from your passions.

Yes, you CAN make mon*ey with your passion…if you know the shortcut secrets. I’ve worked with hundreds of entrepreneurs in over thirty industries and I’ve discovered the TOP SIX steps to successfully turn your passion into passive revenue…

Step 1 – Find Your ONE Passion That Will Easily Turn To Profits

No doubt, you are passionate about a lot of things. But if you want to build a profitable business, you have to focus on the ONE passion that will generate the most money with the least effort. How do you choose which one? Well, think of it this way…

In business, you’re #1 goal is to help people solve problems. So which of your many passions can most easily translate into helping others solve problems? The more value you add to other people’s lives by solving their immediate problems, the more money you’ll make.

Step 2 – Find a Hungry Crowd Who Wants What You Offer

If you’re passionate about something, what do you want to do with all that knowledge and energy inside of you? You want to express it, right? Shout it from the rooftops! But the question is…

Do people want what you offer? If you solve problems for people, are they motivated enough to pay for a solution to their problems?

The key to business success is finding a target market HUNGRY enough to pay you for your products and services. Because there’s usually a BIG difference between what you think people need vs. what they actually want. Your task is to align your passion with a market that’s hungry for what you offer.

Step 3 – Capture Your Market’s Attention

If you’re clear about the problems you solve, and there are people out there looking for the solution…you have to alert them that you have the Golden Key that will set them fr*ee!

…and you’ve got about three seconds to tell them you hold the key.

Find a way to sum up the bottom-line end result you offer people in less than ten words. Because all your market really cares about is the end result they’ll get if they buy your product or service. Your ten words will be used in your headline, tagline and information product titles.

Step 4 – Communicate Your Solution Fast and Effectively

Once you’ve got their attention, you need to connect with them…fast.

Think of your marketing message as a nine minute conversation over a cup of coffee. You have to tell your potential client what’s the end result they will get, why you are the one to help them, why they should care, proof that you’re the one to help, a little bit about how you will help them, reassurance that there’s no risk on them to try and what they need to do now to take advantage of your offer.

Step 5 – Turn Your Solution into a System

Your clients want the simplest, shortest path to the results they desire. The best way to help them get from points A to Z the fastest way possible is to you’re your knowledge into a system. If you’re clear on the end result, you can design a program that walks your clients through, step-by-step, exactly how to achieve what they want.

If you work one-on-one with clients, chances are you are already using a system to guide people through – you just may not realize it yet. In my experience, every service business has a step-by-step system. Your task is to remove yourself enough from what you do so naturally and easily and identify the steps you take people through.

Step 6 – Turn Your System into Information Products

Here’s where you make the most money with your passion…

Once you’ve identified the step-by-step process you take people through to solve their problems, turn that model into an information product! The best part is, you can package your system into multiple products and programs because people prefer learn differently – visual, auditory and experientially.

So you can turn your system into special reports, eBooks, home study kits, videos, group coaching programs, live events…the list goes on and on. Each information product you create is a manifestation of your original passion. Each is another stream of passive revenue you can generate.

You can do this.

Remember, there are people out there right now WAITING for you to show up in their lives and help them solve a problem. They’re holding their wallets – ready to hand money to you…if you show up. It’s your choice now whether you want to turn your passion into a business and offer them the solutions that you know you have within you.

I invite you to take the leap and share your gifts with the world. You will be rewarded by having the freedom and lifestyle you desire.

Six Principles for Success
Wednesday, October 1st, 2008

In these times of economic melt-down, focus must be made on all the tips and strategies to stay on top. The following article by Dale Beaumont outlines Six Principles of Success to override these tough times.

WEAR YOUR UNDERWEAR ON THE OUTSIDE:
Some superpowers you need for business success

Picture this: an eerie place overwhelmed with blackness where the only source of light is the fiery blazes of upturned cars. And it flickers off the tiny shards of glass that spreads itself over footpaths lined with chalky silhouettes of deceased citizens.

Imagine this. But not for too long, as you know that thieves lurk within every shadow and that chaos should always be expected. Then spare a thought for those who prevent it. Those dedicated few who we all like to call SUPERHEROES.

We have all thought about how life would be as superheroes with superpowers. However, to avoid chaos within a business we must do more than just think.

Here are some superhero powers that successful people use to prevent disorder and anarchy within their business.

Laser Vision

Remain focused. Once successful people have defined their aims and outcomes, they zero in on that one thing. Make up your decision and stick to it.

According to property investors, Gary and Jenny Leather, focus is an important element of their success and a piece of advice they offer new property investors. Stop your mind from wandering by focusing on your goals.

Invisibility

Business success requires effort, dedication and sacrifice. But lets face it - you don’t want to be working hard for your entire business career.

Margaret Lomas, founder of Destiny Group, says “when you start a business of your own, your first goal should be to get out of it.” Your success of your business should not deteriorate when you are not there. This is the difference between being ’self-employed’ and being ‘in business.’ So, your first goal in business should be to make yourself invisible.

Flight

While it is important to pay attention to detail, ensure that you also consider the big picture. This may require you to stand back or adopt a bird’s eye view of your business.

Douglas Foo, founder of Apex-Pal International, understands that it is not only important to have a big picture of your company, but also “a good overall picture of the developments and changes in the world and how these changes affect the company.”

Danger Sense

Successful people are able to see danger in advance. Their ability to detect challenges and obstacles before they occur allow them to make decisions and take the necessary action to avoid complications.

Brad Sugars, Action International Chairman, believes that in today’s business world everything is about handling change. He says “be proactive and know what’s going to happen because you’re the one making it happen.”

Strong Superman Incredible Strength

To operate a business, you will require incredible strength. There will be times when you need to go beyond the call of duty to achieve your goals and overcome the challenges and obstacles that impede your path to success.

In 2001, Cleanevent founder, Craig Lovett, made a mistake that almost resulted in the loss of everything, including his business and house. Craig demonstrated extraordinary strength in rebuilding his business and he is now considered one of the most experienced event and venue cleaning and waste strategy experts in the world.

Super Stretch

Do not be afraid to stretch beyond your comfort zone. When you move outside your comfort zone you will experience fear, but from that fear you will grow and achieve success.

Property investor, Peter Comben, was employed as a primary school teacher for sixteen years before he realised that he was in a comfort zone. In an effort to challenge himself and stretch his abilities, Peter left his job and pursued his passion for property.

In Summary

If you want to soar over destruction and mayhem to achieve great heights, then perhaps it’s time for you to start using superpowers that will be productive for your business. Determine what you want to achieve then decide what undies go best with your tie or blouse, because when it comes to business there is nothing wrong with wearing your underwear on the outside.
