Today’s message on marketing lessons is a fabulous one from Ali Brown, otherwise known as the E-zine Queen. Although she has since transferred to another gym, the message is the same.

Ali has reached extraordinary heights in all areas of her life, and shares some great tips here.

Can I share a secret with you?

Many years ago, I almost chose a career in fitness. In my 20s, I modeled for Reebok and Ironman magazine, made it to the final round for hosting a fitness TV show, and I moonlit as an aerobics instructor and personal trainer for several years while I figured out how to get out of my day job in publishing.

Now that I make a great living online, I still make time for my health. And I’m lucky to live close to the most famous gym in the world: Gold’s Gym at Venice Beach, California. On a daily basis, I’m surrounded by bodybuilding legends like Lou Ferrigno and various men named “Gunther,” athletes like Kobe Bryant and Lisa Leslie, and celebs like The Rock. The place is an absolute circus, and I enjoy the entertainment factor.

Marketing LessonsWhen I first joined Gold’s several years ago, I didn’t pay much attention to the “muscleheads” - the professional bodybuilders. But I’ve come to realize they can teach us a lot about marketing and business success. Here are 7 lessons we can all learn from.

1. Hang around people whom you want to be like.

Bodybuilders and aspiring bodybuilders from all over the area come to the Venice Gold’s because it’s the home of bodybuilding. I know a few bodybuilders who drive almost an hour just to work out there. Sure, they could exercise at their neighborhood Bally’s, but instead they make the trip to their Mecca every day through the arduous Los Angeles traffic.

Why? They know that when you hang around people who are doing what you want to do, you automatically have a much greater chance of success. The furious energy at Gold’s is undeniable as soon as you walk in the door. You’re surrounded by world-class competitors, gold medalists, and celebrities. It’s not only motivating and inspiring, but there’s a wealth of knowledge surrounding you as well.

Who are YOU hanging around? (Think about it.)

2. Consistency is the key for long-term success.

Bodybuilders know that a body is built over a long term. And even if they take some time off, they’ll bounce back quickly because of all the training they’ve done over the years. It’s called “muscle memory” - your body remembers your shape and snaps back into place.

In the same way, our clients and customers have “marketing memory.” That is, as long as we’re in front of them on a regular basis, they’ll remember who we are - even if we take a break. (And there’s no better way to stay in front of them than publishing an e-zine!)

3. Ups and downs are a part of the process.

Bodybuilders know that success comes in cycles. It’s physically damaging for them to try to be on “full force” more than a few times every year. They know their limits, and they push them, but they don’t break them.

Marketing has cycles as well. You can hit it hard for a while, then ease back for a bit. Don’t worry when there’s a “down.” Just make sure to immediately follow it with an “up”. Get back on your marketing schedule or mix it up and do something different.

4. Hard work is part of the game.

Bodybuilders don’t wake up and say, “I don’t feel like working out today.” They just do it. It becomes part of their schedule, part of their life. And that ensures their success.

How many of us secretly wish our success would be handed to us on a silver platter? I’m all about attracting success on whatever level we can, but hey, let’s realize there is work involved. The solution is to make the hard work FUN by doing what you love to do and delegating what you don’t.

5. Model others who are already doing what you want to do.

Bodybuilders don’t try to invent their own training programs from scratch. They look at what the top competitors are doing, and they do the same thing. From weightlifting to cardio to diet, they’ve got it down to a precise formula.

Don’t reinvent the wheel when there are others who are already racing along. Find other business owners who are doing what you want to do, and model them. Important: Don’t model ones who are doing it half-assed. Model the best, the ones who are experiencing the immense success that you dream of!

6. Find a mentor or coach for faster results.

I don’t know of any champion who got to where he/she did alone. Every bodybuilding competitor hires a trainer or a coach who has been there before and can walk them through every step of the way. Does this cost them a lot of money? You bet. But they don’t look at what it costs. They look at what it’s WORTH. They’re fast forwarding their success, and that is priceless.

I know many entrepreneurs who have wasted thousands or even tens of thousands of dollars on websites, programs, and training that got them nowhere or pointed them in the wrong direction. Don’t make that mistake - I’ve been there. Stop struggling and invest in someone to show you the way - the right way - the first time. (Not sure where to start? Join my Marketing & Motivation Mastermind.)

7. Show off what you’ve got!

You can be sure the bodybuilding gurus at Gold’s aren’t meek about their successes. They show off their hard work with outfits that emphasize their assets. (Oh, the stories I could tell you about some of the costumes there! Lace catsuit, anyone?)

Even if you don’t have it all (yet), show off what you DO have. Strut your best stuff and toot your own horn. You’re doing the world a disservice if you don’t let us all know what you and your business can offer.

Is Meditation Time Well Spent?
Tuesday, August 12th, 2008

By Danette Hibberd

The answer to the question ‘Is meditation time well spent?’ an emphatic YES! as the benefits of meditation are numerous.

Today, we always seem to be on the go. There is always something that needs to be done.

We place so much importance on activity, achievements and results and therefore it is not surprising that more of us are attempting to find or indeed, require a time for silence. A time to find inner peace, and experience a moment of reflection.

Not only does the practice of meditation offer this wonderful quiet time, it also has many psychological, physiological and spiritual benefits for our overall wellbeing.

One of the five principles of yoga, meditation is an important tool to achieve mental clarity, and just some of the benefits are listed below.

Psychological Benefits of Meditation

    Increases creativity
    Decreases stress and anxiety
    Reduces symptoms of depression
    Increases brain wave coherence
    Reduces irritability
    Improves memory and learning capacity
    Increases self actualisation
    Increases feelings of vitality
    Increases happiness
    Increases emotional stability
    Reduces thoughts of negativity

Physiological Benefits of Meditation

Creates a state of deep rest due to decreased metabolic rate, lower heart rate and reduced the workload of the heart
Reduces stress by lowering levels of the chemicals cortisol and lactate
Reduces levels of free radicals known as unstable oxygen molecules that cause damage to body tissues
    Improves the blood pressure levels
Increases skin resistance (lower skin resistance is correlated with higher levels of anxiety
Reduces cholesterol levels (higher levels are associated with cardiovascular disease)
Easier breathing as the flow of air to the lungs improves
    Slows down the ageing process

Spiritual Benefits of Meditation

As we meditate, we are taken to the source of happiness which in fact is our own peace of mind. Without such peace, we are constantly assaulted by negative thoughts and pressures from the outside world. Allowing the body and mind to relax during this time rejuvenates our flow of energy enabling us to more effectively face the responsibilities of our demanding life.

As harmony becomes a bigger part of our life and we develop the latent powers of the mind, we gain a greater perspective of life and discover our true purpose of life. We will shift our efforts toward both personal and spiritual growth as we find the answer to ‘Who am i?’. Listening to the mind and ignoring our egoistic perspective we can begin to realise that our true and natural potential is far greater than what we currently believe which then allows us to discover our true creativity and potential.

There are many types of meditation, but if you are a beginner, you may prefer the practice of guided meditation. The calming voice of your leader will guide you through each step of the meditation process. Have a look at or even practice along with the video in this blog to be guided through a meditation. You’ll be glad you did!

Meditation involving visualisation will assist in changing your outlook on life, indeed discovering that there is so much more to learn.

“The most important lesson meditation teaches us is that our home - our beautiful universe - is changeable (impermanent) by its very nature. You will begin to understand, appreciate and make peace with the passing show of this world.” - Anatole

The Law of Attraction and the Science of Getting Rich
By Danette Hibberd

What are you thinking about right now? The Law of Attraction states that “whatever we think about, we bring about”.

This law may initially seem like new age fluff but believe it or not, there are scientific merits to this proposition. The top quantum physicists of our time have discovered that our universe and our reality is very much directed by the “observer”.

When studying quantum particles (the smallest observable unit of matter), these scientists discovered that such particles behave in accordance with the person conducting the experiment. It the scientists “predict” that quantum particles behave in a certain way, they do. And yet, if the scientists “predict” that quantum particles behave in another way, they do. It is the “observer” that dictates the outcome of the experiment!

What does all this mean for us normal people? Well actually, these scientific experiments has far reaching implications for us as our world is made up of these same quantum particles! In this case, we are the “observer” the director and hence the creator of our reality, our world and our experience.

So, be careful of what you think about! for example, have you thoughts ever begun with the following phrases:

I don’t understand…

I don’t want…

I’m frustrated that…

I hate my…

I can’t figure out …

I’m stressed about…

I’m worried that…

I should be able to… but I can’t…

Why am I having so much trouble?

The Law of Attraction is indifferent to the words preceding your thought. Whatever you think about you will attract into your life. When you think “I don’t understand why bad things always happen to me?”, you are “attracting” bad things into your life. When you think “I want to get out of debt”, you are attracting more debt into your life. When you think “I’m worried I will get sick”, you are attracting sickness into your life! The Law of Attraction brings about what you focus on even if it is not what you want. Get it?

If you understand this principle, here are some examples of how to make the law of attraction work to support you rather than to act against you. Try observing your thoughts and changing your thinking in the following way:

“I want to get out of debt” to “I want to earn amazing riches”

“I hate my boss” to “I look forward to owning my own business”

“I don’t understand why he is so lazy” to “I love it when he helps out around the house”

“I’m stressed about this project” to “I always create amazing results in my projects”

“I’m worried about getting sick” to “I experience vibrant health daily”

The SCR Program

Now that we have a better understanding of the Law of Attraction, it is no surprise why so many people struggle with regards to money. It is been said that “the rich get richer while the poor get poorer”. This is actually the Law of Attraction in action. Because the wealthy have money, they often think about how to best use their money and hence they attract more money. The poor on the other hand often think about their present lack of money and unfortunately, that also attracts lack into their lives. Currently, 96% of the world’s wealth is being earned by just 1% of the population!

To address this issue, the main teachers behind the movie is launching a program is called “The Science of Getting Rich” and it is based on employing the law of attraction to create wealth. This amazing program is based on the principles and philosophies outlined in a book of the same title written in 1910 by Wallace D Wattles. This is the same book that inspired the movie.

What is the Science of Getting Rich about? Well in the words of Wallace D. Wattles, “The ownership of money and property comes as a result of doing things in a certain way. Those who do things in this certain way, whether on purpose or accidentally, get rich. Those who do not do things in this certain way, no matter how hard they work or how able they are, remain poor. It is a natural law that like causes always produce like effects. Therefore, any man or woman who learns to do things in this certain way will infallibly get rich.” The Science of Getting Rich Seminar is all about teaching how to do things in this “certain” way to create wealth.

A simple idea turns into $30,000,000!
Monday, August 11th, 2008

Do you have a simple idea to turn into $30,000,000?

Can you imagine making $30,000,000?

Sound impossible? Does this only happen in your dreams?

I just heard of this lady, Lisa Lloyd, founded her company as a young single mother, earning a measly $13,000 per year, from a simple wire coathanger.

Lisa used a wire coathanger, bent it, cut it, added some foam around the wire and came up with her tool to create a french twist for hair. And her company has now made over 30 million dollars.

Check out this video and see how she did it.

What tools, utensils, objects or things do you have around your house that can be turned into something useful and innovative?

This is proof that any of us can make our millions from a simple idea.

Think about how you too can become an entrepreneur from just an idea.

Healthy Aging Begins With Positive Thinking
Wednesday, August 6th, 2008

By Danette Hibberd

Successful, happy and healthy aging begins with the power of the mind - Positive Thinking!

How to think positive:
Many people wander the earth believing they the lack the strength and power to achieve their goals. Sadly, it is this negative mechanism that holds them back. You can gain motivation and live an increasingly healthier life by simply telling yourself “I can do it.” Anything you put your mind to can be achieved. As is often quoted, Thoughts Become Things. Desire it, Think it and Achieve it.

How to tell yourself “I can do it”:
You have to be in control of your thoughts, actions, behaviours, etc by building your power of the mind. Nevertheless, if you do not put your mind to it and you decide that you do not want to take the necessary actions, then you are only living a life filled with shortcomings. Your negative reflections will defeat the purpose of getting your thoughts in control. Procrastinating or saying I will do it later, is another negative reflection. This procrastination leads to laziness. Laziness leads to weak minds and bodies which may gradually build up to medical problems. Fatigue, boredom, stress can result and we all know the outcome that these symptoms can cause. Simply tell yourself, I want this desire, I can have this desire and I will do what it takes to achieve this desire.

Take control of your thoughts.
If you want something badly enough you will do what you have to do to get where you want to be. You need to make a goal and stick to it. Create plans that help you to reach your goals, and take action each day to achieve. Break your goal into tiny steps and reward yourself each step of the way to maintain your motivation. When you give up, it is a sign that you lack faith in yourself and therefore provides a clear indication of weakness. You need faith to stay strong and to stay on track to achieving your goal. As well, you need positive thinking to strive. Strive for success with positive thoughts and you will succeed.

Good results:
Having a positive attitude will give you a jumpstart to a healthier life. Keep on pushing. Do not stop once you get started, but instead keep going until you finally reach your goal. When times get hard and you don’t think you can go on just remember I –can- do – By affirming with positive affirmations, your head will stay up and your mind and heart will remain open. Don’t dwell on something you can’t change, rather focus on the things you have power to change.

How to continue positive living:
To stay positive you have to admit your feelings and express them. If you feel depressed or frustrated, just say it aloud. But, don’t stay there. Acknowledge your frustrations, accept them as a challenge, but then move forward. Any challenge you encounter can be turned into an opportunity, and is presented to you for you to eventually receive your higher purpose. Stay in control, express what you feel in the moment, thank that feeling for allowing you to find the strength required to overcome the challenge and then move on.

Many books, videos, dvds and messages are available to set your mind and your life in a positive direction. Use these tools if you need mentoring along your journey to instill positive thinking in your world.

Just remember you can achieve whatever you desire and keep your mind set for the good and positive things and not the negative. This will make you feel better and ultimately make you a happier person. If you’re happy, you will have a healthier life. Don’t forget to create a goal. Chunk your goal down into smaller steps and enjoy the rewards along the way.

Positive thinking will allow you to live the life you desire and provide you with absolute health and happiness. What more could you ask for in life?

Look Good and Feel Fabulous
Tuesday, August 5th, 2008

One of the biggest problems women face today is that they do not know how to properly dress for their body types. As women, there is always something that we do not like about our bodies. But if you know how to correctly address your “problem” areas, then your confidence will increase and your inner beauty and personality will come shining through.

The key to looking good and feeling fabulous is to dress for your body shape.

This can often be tricky, so it is important to dress for your particular shape and not what you think looks good on the hanger.

So, what is your body shape? Are you petite? Athletic? Curvaceous? Tall? Top heavy? Or, maybe you consider yourself to be pear shaped. Whatever shape, height or form you are, know that you are perfect. Yes, perfect as you are.

However, you can improve both your confidence and appearance by simply taking charge of what you wear. Although most of us don’t exactly fit into one category, we usually have a primary body shape. and using care, can accent our best features and create a proportionate look. Take a good look at yourself in the mirror. What stands out the most? What part of your body would you like to accentuate? What part would you like to camouflage?

Tips when shopping for clothes

The biggest key of all is to wear clothes that fit properly. Regardless of being tall, short, curvaceous or slender, apparel that is either too baggy or too tight will not do you justice.

Another tip that applies to all body shapes is to avoid buying an item of clothing just because it’s the latest fad. Not every trend works on every body type. Instead, purchase classic clothing in more modern cuts and accent your base wardrobe with a few pieces of trendy clothing that are appropriate for your body.

Forget about size. Accentuate the positives and dressing to suit your figure is the only way to look your best. You may dislike your tummy but love your legs. Or think your bust is perfect but your hips are too wide. Dress for success every time by flaunting the best bits.

When wearing prints, a larger print should be worn where you want people to look and smaller print where you do not want them to look. An all over print can camouflage figure problems, but scattered prints here and there can create a fuller version of you. Prints around the neck and over the shoulder can make your shoulders appear wider. Wear prints near the parts of your figure’s assets, because they are usually more eye catching than a solid color.

And don’t forget the shoes. Heels will elongate the legs and add shape to your calves. Shoes with straps will shorten the legs.

Finally, wear a well supporting bra and undergarments. Many lingerie companies now manufacture a wide range of under wear that can alter your body shape in an instant. Why not give them a go?

Ensure your wardrobe fits and flatters. Feeling good about what you wear will do more for your confidence than any optical illusion you might create.
